What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular, minimally invasive laser eye surgery used to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. It reshapes the cornea so that light focuses properly on the retina, improving vision, often eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Benefits of LASIK

Quick procedure

Usually takes about 10–15 minutes per eye

Fast recovery

Most people return to normal activities within 24–48 hours

Immediate results

Many notice improved vision within hours

Long-term results

Vision correction is typically permanent, though age-related changes can still occur

Key Considerations Before LASIK

Am I a good candidate?

You must:

  • Be 18 or older
  • Have stable vision for at least 12 months
  • Have healthy corneas and no significant eye disease
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations

Certain conditions, like thin corneas, chronic dry eyes, or autoimmune diseases, may disqualify you.

Is LASIK safe?

Yes, LASIK is very safe and effective, with a high success rate. However, like all surgery, it carries risks and side effects.

Potential Side Effects or Risks

Most patients experience few if any complications, but potential side effects include dry eyes (common and often temporary) and visual disturbances such as glare, halos, or starbursts around lights, especially at night. Some patients may experience undercorrection or overcorrection, requiring further treatment. Flap complications are rare but possible. Vision regression, where vision worsens slightly over time, can occur in some cases. Serious complications are rare, especially with proper screening and experienced surgeons.

What Happens During the Procedure?

The LASIK procedure begins with numbing eye drops to ensure your comfort. You’ll feel pressure but no pain. Your surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea and folds it back, then uses a laser to precisely reshape the cornea according to your prescription. The flap is then replaced, where it heals naturally without requiring stitches. The entire process is quick and highly precise.

Recovery Timeline

Same day

24–48 hours

Vision improves significantly

1 week

Resume most normal activities

1–3 months

Vision stabilizes completely

You’ll need to avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, and wearing makeup for a short time after surgery.
